Photo Therapy Session #3:
The Least Obvious, Yet Extremely Powerful, Reason Why People Put Off Organizing Their Photographs:
Emotions
This is an interesting one. It's not as obvious as the other obstacles.
This is the one that we may not even be aware of consciously, but it impacts us just the same.
Memories . . . Sometimes the trip down memory lane isn't a peaceful stroll.
A painful divorce, a less-than-perfect childhood, even friendships that have ended too soon. Any number of emotional situations may stare you in the face as you look through old photographs.
Even the best of memories can be painful to recall if you're mourning the loss of a loved one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're facing this roadblock, then here are some tips on how you can overcome it:
Be gentle with yourself. Understand why you've been putting this off.
Do take action but tread lightly at first and give yourself time to cope with your emotions.
Try to reframe the situation and look at it as a healthy
opportunity for you to heal.
If you'd rather not face this alone, then call on a friend to help you.
If you treat yourself gently and allow yourself to feel the emotions that may arise, then you should be able to take some action toward caring for your photographs. As you take that action and nurture yourself along the way, you should begin to feel some relief -- from your emotions and from your piles of photos.
