THE CREATIVE ART OF SCRAPBOOKING

Scrapbooking is a method for preserving personal and family history in the form of a scrapbook. method for preserving personal and family history in the form of a scrapbook. It typically includes photos, memorabilia and journaling. Older scrapbooks created by our grandparents, while well intentioned, often weren't created to stand the test of time.

Nowadays, we have access to better products as well as information and a plethora of fun, colorful papers, stickers, pens etc...It's allows us the freedom to use our own creativity while preserving our family memories.

Here are a few things to remember:
  • When creating a scrapbook, is to be sure you use archival quality products, specifically acid-free, lignin-free and PVC-free. (To learn more about what these terms mean, read The Very Abbreviated Version of the Boring, Technical Stuff on our site.)
  • If you are adding memorabilia to your scrapbook, be sure to test it for acidity using a pH Testing Pen. More than likely it is not archival (especially if it is newspaper clippings which is the most destructive to your photographs) and if that is the case you have a couple of options: scan the item and print on acid-free, lignin-free paper; color copy onto acid-free, lignin-free paper or if you absolutely want the original, be sure to put it on a separate page from your photographs and be sure to use PVC sheet protectors.
  • There is no right or wrong way to scrapbook! (Except, of course, using the wrong materials). Enjoy the freedom of creativity and expression to commemorate your family albums.

You can find supplies at your local craft stores or many online companies such as Scrapbook.com and GetSmart Products. GetSmart products carries Pioneer Photo Albums which are some of my favorites.
